Better Serving Students in Temporary Housing

How can the Department of Education better support students living in temporary housing?

Partners & Funders

Two PPL team members talk with a collaborator at a long table. The room is filled with streamers hung from the ceiling and images of Dr. Seuss books taped to the walls.

The Project

Between 2011 and 2016, the number of insecurely housed students in NYC public schools grew by 49%. We worked with the NYC Department of Education to improve school engagement and student achievement for these students, working to ensure that even the most vulnerable students can thrive at school.

The Outcome

Through research and co-design with the DOE’s Students in Temporary Housing unit–engaging program leaders and frontline staff across the system–we developed a set of findings and recommendations to strengthen the unit’s strategy and functions.
