Understanding the School Choice Experience

How can we help New York students and their families navigate the high school admissions process?

The Project

Each year over 75,000 students participate in a school-selection and application process to gain admission to the city’s public high schools. We explored how New York families navigate the high-school choice process.

The Outcome

We identified four needs that policymakers, staff, and families share and provided DOE leadership with a set of conceptual designs for improving the choice process. These recommendations ultimately informed the development of the DOE’s first digital high-school directory.
